My week in Austin

What an amazing trip I had to Austin, Connecticut and New York, then unfortunately immediately on my return I got the flu, but I’m happily on my way to wellness again and ready to start sharing my adventures with you.

The weekend I arrived in Austin, I taught two classes with the Austin Area Quilt Guild. This was the first guild I belonged to 17 years ago, so it was a real treat to be back in my old home and seeing old friends again. FO paintFO briannastudent ornaments fiesta orn cat FO lizard jana

Now this is fascinating! One of my students Mary, shared her finished project from my Tea & Ephemera class a year or two ago that had accidentally gone through the washing machine!!!

I am amazed at how incredibly well her finished piece looks after that! Almost all the paper imagery is completely intact. One of the art papers that had been collaged on near the oxo did come off but bits of it remain and has a nice distressed look that certainly doesn’t hurt it at all. Who knew?!?!

On Monday night, I gave a lecture to the guild talking about Inspiration. It was fun to share with the guild how my years spent in Austin influenced a large body of my work and how many of the events in my life since I moved away have influenced the direction of my more recent work.
lectureIt was wonderful, seeing my good friend Kathy York at the guild meeting too.

While I was in Austin I had the opportunity to see several close friends that I have missed so much over the last 10 years and eat at some of my favorite places.

Ruby's BBQWhat a treat to have lunch my ex’s old advertising partner Mike Woolf, who was like part of the family, at one of our favorite spots Ruby’s BBQ. The bbq brisket taco was exactly as delicious as the last time I had one 10 years ago and I loved that the restaurant itself was exactly the same inside and out.

IMG_7546I loved reconnecting with my dear old art school days friend Mike Conway who is a graphic designer/illustrator and actor.

tacodeliA facebook friend recommended the papadulce (sweet potato) taco at Taco deli, of course I had to check that out and a scallop taco while I was at it, and the verdict is; fantastic! don’t miss this place if you get to Austin.

shoal creekMy kids and I often went to Shoal Creek to take our dog for walks in the dog park and to look for fossils like these belonging to my friend Leila and her son David, my sons old fossil hunting partner.fossils

anoleThis cute little green anole lizard was my room mate in the studio at my friend Leila’s. He was staying warm under a blanket on the yoga mat.

On friday, I taught a painting class with the Austin Fiber Artists, where I got to see my friend Martha Tsihlas.IMG_7555
