The most beautiful train ride I’ve ever taken

The day after Phil joined me in Christchurch, we boarded the Tranzalpine train to Greymouth on the west coast of the southern island of New Zealand. This is a 3 hour train ride that begins by crossing the lush green farm land of the Canterbury plains dotted with sheep, then over the majestic southern alps, along the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, through miles of native beech forest and a vibrant yellow gorse covered landscape.

The view and weather constantly changed as we passed through a dozen micro-climates and from one breath taking location to another. I took soooo many photos (on my iphone), these are just a few of the many incredible vistas we saw.

On the last hour of the train ride we went to the open observation car where we could watch cows grazing in verdant green fields and hear sheep bah and run as the train went past. This was the first time in my life where I have felt truly overwhelmed by beauty.

I’m heading to the Fresno Fiber-arts guild this weekend to teach my prayer flags workshop. Stay turned for my more posts on my grand adventure down-under.
