Last Friday Phil and I drove to Los Angeles so he could perform at the Disney Cal Arts Redcat theater with a group called the Hub, that he’s been creating experimental digital music with since the 1980’s.
We chose to drive down for the weekend so we could drive back and make a detour to Yosemite.
Out of all the years I’ve lived in California, until now I had never been to Yosemite, mainly because my ex never took vacations. When Phil and I first started dating, I told him I had never been and he said we had to fix that.
It took a few years for our schedules to accommodate a trip, but we finally did it! We spent our days hiking and basically being in various states of awe. I was immersed in natural beauty for 3 full days and now I’m itching to create. Which leads me to my next topic;
We’re in the home stretch for sign ups, with only a week left to register. Some classes are filled, but there’s still spots available in a few. A couple of classes have waiting lists (Paint & Print-A-Palooza for me), but those spots sometimes open up as things get closer and plans change, so don’t let that deter you from signing up.
Given how stressed out we are all feeling right now, no matter what side of the fence you’re on, pouring your energy into crafting beautiful things with a group of loving creatives has got to be the best medicine!
Thursday, Jan 12
Have you ever struggled with how to paint backgrounds? Keep paint from bleeding? Avoid blotchiness?
In this class, I will teach you how to master painting illustrative imagery on fabric, while learning to create smooth gradations of color, fill large areas evenly, paint glazes of translucent color to create more visual depth, work with freezer paper masks, as well as paint fine lines and details.
I use these handmade stamps in all my mixed media work; painting with acrylic inks, and for creating printed fabric like my Paint & Print-A-Palooza class and my Prayer Flags class (below).
Friday, Jan 13
Make your own personal fabric line! Learn several techniques for creating colorful textured fabrics using acrylics inks, and then learn how to apply patterns using thermo-fax screens and a variety of different stamping techniques.
Saturday, Jan 14
Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, strength, well-being and wisdom, and when blown by the wind, spread good will and compassion.
In this class, we’ll begin by making a variety of colorful fabrics with acrylic inks. Then using stamps and thermofax screens we’ll add unique personal imagery on the fabrics, then we’ll incorporate meaningful words and quotes by collaging printed abaca tissue papers. By the end of the day, the finished flags will be strung together for hanging.
