On the evening of my last workshop in Tauranga, Phil and I drove an hour east to Whakatane, to the location of my next two day workshop.
We arrived at the home of our wonderful hosts, Katrina and Bob, and got to unwind with a glass of wine, and this gorgeous view from high up on a hill top overlooking the ocean and hills before dinner.
I had to teach the next morning, but Phil got out and saw a bit more of Whakatane than I did, so these are his photos.
That’s Whale island off shore and in the distance behind it is White island that had the horrible eruption a few months ago. Because of the overcast conditions it’s hard to see it in this photo, but in clear weather you can see the volcano along with a cloud of steam from it’s top.

It’s really ideal to have 2 days for a painting workshop because I can teach most of the basics in one day, but it helps if I’m there to work with students once there’s a fair amount of paint on their fabric, and that’s usually right about the end of the first day. On the second day, I can help each student individually to master the techniques they may be struggling with and give them the extra guidance they need to master gradations, attaining smooth coverage of paint and recognizing where more contrast is needed to give the image more dimension and definition.
It was wonderful to see Margaret McKerris again. Margaret took workshops with me at New Zealand Quilt symposium 2 years ago and painted the Kakapo parrot. She painted the pink bird after that and entered it into the Aotearoa Quilters Pink challenge in 2018 and won viewers choice!
Here’s the ever lovely, Mary Transom, professional art quilting tutor, holding her gorgeous passion fruit flower painting.
Pauline Dennis, who painted the jay, posted a photo on facebook of her beautifully, quilted bird.
And this one is my unfinished class demo painting.
We had a short, but sweet visit in Whakatane. After I finished class on Sunday afternoon, we hit the road and drove an hour to a lakeside bach (cabin) for two days of R&R in tranquil Lake Rotoiti, courtesy of my generous Whakatane student Caroline Stewart. 🙂 There will be some very cool photos in the next post.

I feel incredibly lucky to have a wonderful travel partner like Phil, it makes the whole experience so much richer, besides the fact that he is willing to drive, lol.
