Happy Easter

When I was a little girl in Massachusetts, we used to go to my grandmother’s house in Lowell for Easter and we always had eggs poached in pure maple syrup. My grandmother was French Canadian so maybe that is where it comes from. As strange as many people think it sounds, it sure is good. If anyone else knows of this tradition please comment I would love to know where it originates.

Since my kids are now teenagers we decided to forgo the chocolate bunnies and jelly beans this year and make chocolate zucchini cupcakes. This cake is my families favorite, it is so moist and chocolaty with a hint of cinnamon. If you would like to try this cake you can find the recipe here. I am sure you will not be disappointed.

  1. which part of canada was your grandmother from? My mom is from Newfoundland, I’ve never heard of poaching eggs in maple syrup, could be a regional thing.

Judy, I had to laugh about the eggs poached in maple syrup. When I was a little girl my family would often go camping. The men would get up early and go fishing, and we would have fresh caught, baby brookies pan fried with our breakfast. My mother was cooking, usually pancakes over an old shepherds stove we used. My pop would fix my plate just like he did his. With peanut butter and butter on the pancakes, and maple syrup. Then he would plop an fried egg on top. I absolutely HATED it. To this day, I just can’t stand to have syrup on my eggs. It would make me just cry, but I was not able to articulate what I didn’t like, and he was clueless.

    Thanks for the memory.

I couldn’t believe it when I read your remarks about eggs poached in maple syrup. My grandparents were from Lowell MA and my grandpa originally came from Quebec. I believe the recipe comes from the French but I’m not sure. Small world.

  4. Wow, that is amazing! I did a little google search and found this recipe seems to originate in Quebec. I wonder if our relations knew each other.
