Teaching while visiting my furry, and feathery friends in Palmerston North

To get to my next teaching location, I booked a ride on a bus from Napier to Palmerston North. The busses in New Zealand are reasonably priced, comfortable, convenient, and they give you lots of opportunities to appreciate the beautiful views.

Also, at this point on the trip I was still traveling by myself and had no intention of attempting to drive on the other side of the road while navigating to a new location.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to stay with my friend Sarah, who’s the daughter of my friend Erilyn McMillan who booked me to come to New Zealand for the first time back in 2010.

This is Luna all grown up now, so gorgeous.

I had such a wonderful time staying with Sarah and visiting with her menagerie of sheep, chickens and bees. Look at that sweet face!

Not sure if I ever posted this painting that I did from one of Sarah’s Instagram photos last year. It was nice to be able to give it to her in person when I arrived. 🙂

This is beautiful Odin, a rare breed of Arapawa sheep, who sadly got ill and had to be put down a couple weeks after I left. I’m so glad I got to see him all grown up with his impressive horns.

The roosters definitely liked to strut their stuff.

These are the first Hazelnuts I’ve ever seen fresh off a tree. Many nuts have an outer husk so it was interesting that they only have a wrapping of leaves at the top where it connects to the branch.

and then there’s my beloved passionfruit. I want to grow a vine with fruit here in California!

They are the ugliest, strangest, most delicious fruit, and I adore the crunchy, gooey, tart pulp with Greek yogurt and granola for breakfast. It’s one of the first things I want to eat when I’m in New Zealand or Australia.

Of course, the primary reason I was in Palmerston North was to teach a workshop.
