Paint & Print-a-palooza at Craft Napa

I was so excited to teach my new Paint & Print-a-palooza class at Craft Napa. It is a take off of my 10+ Techniques with acrylic inks class with a focus on creating colorful patterned fabrics that can be used for piecing, appliqué or any way that you enjoy working with unique and original textiles.

This is a process class where we begin with white pfd cotton and go through a variety of methods of applying acrylic inks to create colorful base fabrics that we use to build pattern on in a variety of ways.

As we work through the techniques the floor fills with a sea of colorful fabric.

We explore simple shibori techniques that give beautiful results with acrylic inks.

Great results can be attained using salt too.

Next we introduce using stamps,

and then overlay designs using thermofax screens.

I always encourage students to use one piece of fabric as their clean up rag (on the right), because the simple random application of color by wiping off a brush or cleaning up drips can become an incredibly beautiful piece of cloth to work on top of.

We also talk about types of pattern repeats, color, value, and contrast.

Look at all this beautiful fabric:

So many gorgeous fabrics created in one short day. I am so excited to do this as a multi-day class at Meissner’s in Sacramento in April, and at SLO Creative Studio in May.

Friday evening was the artists market.

It was wonderful to see Melanie Testa‘s  beautiful hand printed fabric using fiber reactive procion dyes on display, along with her new book Playful Fabric Printing  that she co-authored with master dyer Carol Soderlund.

Like many of you, I’ve been watching Melly post photos of her fabric and the quilts she’s made over the last couple years, but I have to tell you there’s nothing like seeing her fabric up close, it is beautiful!

Please check out the bloghop for Melanie Testa and Carol Soderlund‘s new book Playful Fabric Printing for a chance to win a copy!

What a gorgeous array of cloth your students created. I always love seeing what people create who are given the same supplies and directions. Everyone comes up with their own unique expression of themselves.

I love seeing the unique way the fabric comes out as everyone takes the basic techniques and chooses their own colors and marks and applies them with their own hand. I love seeing what develops!

This book looks very interesting to me. Coincidentally, I’ve been gathering information about dyeing fabric.

Make sure to come back on friday Rosie to leave a comment when it’s my turn on the blog hop. This book is pretty amazing, there’s no other book out there like it.

I can’t wait to get my own home later this year and to be able to set it up to suit me with craft stuff everywhere, no TV etc…
This book sounds great, I would love to win it.
