Teaching at International Quilt Festival

I’m a bit late getting this blogpost written, but my life has become a lot busier now that I’m working in the makerspace 4 days a week. I’m also furiously prepping for my upcoming trip to New Zealand, organizing a teaching trip to Australia next July, getting things ready for a full exhibit of my work next month, beginning to prep for Craft Napa, and oh yeah there’s a couple big holidays coming up. EEK!

Well, my 3 1/2 days in Houston went by in a flash, with very little time for socializing, but we had a lot of fun creating in my Paint and Printapalooza and Tea & Ephemera classes!

Day 1 & 2 Paint and Printapalooza

Paint and Printapalooza is a multi-day workshop on making your own custom hand printed fabric, using acrylic inks instead of dyes.

Acrylic inks have become on of my favorite mediums to use to color fabric because I don’t have to worry about the toxicity associated with mixing dyes, the harsh environmental impact of wasting water from rinsing out dyes, impatiently wait for dyes to batch, or worry about getting questionable color results that can occur when using dyes. What you see is what you get, it’s instant gratification, and when the ink dries, it’s permanent.

We always start off by working through a series of different techniques for applying color.

Then apply pattern using stamps

and thermofax screens

We also explore a variety of shibori techniques.

I’m a bit of a pattern geek so I have a lot of fun with this class.

Day 3 Tea & Ephemera

The ever popular Tea & Ephemera class was a full house.

This class is mixed-media mayhem, starting with thermofax printing and ending with stencils and a whole bunch of other techniques in between.

It was such a treat to have these 4 lovely ladies from Australia in my class. You may be familiar with the fantastic quilt work by Sue DeVanny on the far left, and Caroline Sharkey between us.

While in Houston I found out my quilt Polychromatic Predilection was featured in an article in the Houston Chronicle about International Quilt Festival.

and I was able to buy a copy of a new book called Magic and Memories on the history of quilt festival that featured my quilt on the dedication page in addition to the full page image of my quilt.

In other news,

I have a full exhibit of my quilts coming up at Bay Quilts, in Richmond, CA for the month of December. There will be a LOT of quilts hanging! The opening reception will be Sunday, December 8 from 1-4 pm.
