Before leaving Townsville, Cecile and I drove 85 miles inland to Charters Towers,
past croc infested waters
on long stretches of road littered with a significant amount of kangaroo and wallaby road kill (which I didn’t photograph)
past fields and cow pastures strewn with large termite mounds
before we arrived at the 140 year old mining town.
The town is filled with many beautiful turn of the century buildings.

Outback as far as the eye can see.
If you think it looks hot, it was… 99°F and early spring. It’s mind boggling to think those early settlers moved out there and stayed through summer (before AC) year after year.

I’ve been to Charters Towers back in 1993 and I met a lot of nice quilters. The town reminded me of the little gold mining town where I lived at the time named Placerville, CA. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
